Stonecutter becomes the lowest as-built embodied carbon figure of any major new-build commercial scheme in the City of London since 2022, Building Design shares

The newly-launched Stonecutter has the lowest as-built embodied carbon figure compared to any major new-build commercial scheme in the City of London since 2022.

Building Design has shared Stonecutter in pictures, highlighting how the 13-storey, 240,000 sq ft workspace in the Fleet Street Quarter is the first office building to deliver the City of London’s ‘aspirational’ target for as built embodied carbon. Designed by tp bennett, the CO—RE project was commissioned by La Caisse and PIMCO Prime Real Estate.

Material efficiency was prioritised in the team’s decarbonisation drive. Here are just some of the innovative methods used throughout the building:

The design retained the existing site’s foundations, which saved an estimated 2,600 tonnes of CO2.

The building incorporates 40-60% cement replacement in the concrete used throughout the building, adjusted according to the strength required. This was a significant improvement on the industry standard of 30% replacement. Cement was replaced with a byproduct of an industrial process, using a waste product for good as well as requiring less energy during production.

Two thirds of the steelwork used was produced in an electric arc furnace, which saves 60% embodied carbon compared to a traditional blast furnace.

An all-electric building, Stonecutter’s smart technology enables occupiers to monitor and manage their energy usage in real time.

Stonecutter will benefit from the latest energy conservation methods including a highly efficient air source cooling system, enhanced insulation and solar panels.

Biodiversity has been prioritised throughout, with extensive green roofs, terraces and rooftop gardens.
